Information for Residents

The following is information that we hope will be useful for our residents, both new and current. It should cover most of the items you need to know when moving into a new locality and serves as a reminder for current residents..

Golf Carts in Town	Golf Carts and Utility Vehicles may be used on certain streets within the Town when driven by a licensed driver. These must be properly equipped - click here to see the Golf Cart and Utility Vehicle Ordinance.
Water and Sewer	Most of Onancock is covered by the Town's central water supply and sanitary sewers; get water turned on at Town Hall. Rates are shown below.
Auto Decal	Obtain at Town Hall - $27 for automobiles and $8 for trailers.
Auto Registration and Drivers License	Get at DMV office across street from Town Hall
Garbage	Picked up weekly (Monday) via a town wide contract (part of your taxes). There are monthly special pickups. For details on both of these, go to the trash pickup information page.
Leash Law for Dogs	Yes - dogs must be on a leash when off your property. And, please pick up after your dog when walking them.
Personal Property Tax	Levied on registered items such as cars, boats, trailers; County and Town

Business License	Obtain at Town Hall. The annual fee is determined by the type of business and gross receipts. The minimum annual fee in all categories is $30 and this is generally the fee for the first year of business.
Transient Occupancy	In addition to the state sales tax, Bed & Breakfasts and Motels etc. collect a 4% Transient Occupancy Tax.
Meals Tax	4%
Emergencies	Use 911 for medical, fire and police emergencies
911 Address	Within the county, there are special 911 addresses to assist emergency vehicles in finding locations. Within Onancock, it is simply your normal street address.
Building Permits	Obtain these at Town Hall. Please see the Building Permits page for information on when these are needed and the fees.

Water & Sewer Rates for the Fiscal Year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009.
Both Water and Sewer are based on water usage (quarterly).

Under certain specified circumstances, an adjustment might be made to an unusually high water and/or sewer billing resulting from water leaks or other circumstances causing abnormally high water usage. Please read WATER AND SEWER BILLING ADJUSTMENT POLICY.
